[Kame's Review]: "The Troubled Texan"

Troubled Texan by Phyliss Miranda
Publisher: eKensington (March 6, 2014)
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Small-town Texas isn't big enough for the both of them. . .or is it just right?

Sheriff Donovan "Deuce" Cowan has seen his share of trouble, but when he nearly hauls in Maressa Clarkson for speeding, he's suddenly in over his head. These days his long-lost high school classmate is calling herself Rainey Michaels and she sure hasn't come to Kasota Springs by accident. It seems the Los Angeles Deputy DA has chosen the West Texas town to hide out from a dangerous convict. It's all Deuce can do not to corral the sexy spitfire—in the name of keeping her safe, of course. Problem is, Rainey isn't letting anyone in on her big secret, least of all a hard-bodied, former pro-footballer sheriff with an overactive protective instinct. So now she's trying to keep him in line, one slow kiss at a time. . ..

Kame's Review:

Rainey lives in fear. She helped convict a mass murderer but he has promised to have her killed. Convinced by a friend she must disappear Rainey leaves LA and three months later arrives in a small Texas town that reminds her of the one she grew up in a few hours away. What she doesn’t expect is to be pulled over for speeding by her high school crush.

I know this plot centers around Rainey and her awful ordeal of being stalked but for me my favorite character was Sheriff Donovan "Deuce" Cowan.  He was a caring sheriff and seemed to have lots of friends in town. There were times I think he was rather blind to facts, but it helped move the plot along. He is a Texan, rancher, lawman, former professional football player. All my favorite heroes in one! Rainey at times seemed to just not know what she wanted, but I might be the same way if I was being stalked by a mass murderer.  She seemed very broken and ready for someone to care for her. It took a while for me to warm up to her.

This book had an interesting plot. I liked the idea of two high school acquaintances that never confessed to their crushes finding each other again. Their relationship had lots of starts and stops which at times I found infuriating, but not as much as the buildup of heat between characters to only have a splash of cold water on them.  The resolution of the conflict was quick and rather convenient for me. However the subplot of Deuce’s Mom was done very well and I enjoyed the resolution.  Lastly the end of the story just boggled me and I am not sure what type of HEA they have.

I am not sure if this is in a series or a stand-alone. The fact that I truly enjoyed the hero has me willing to check out another book by this author.

Meet Kame:

Kame is part of a family of readers; one day she picked up the Nook she purchased for her husband and discovered her love of e-books. A few months later he purchased one for her so he could have his back! Kame’s Nook is never far, and she is hard pressed to pick a favorite book, genre or author. As long as there are characters that make her want to sit down and have a chat and a plot keeps the pages turning, she’ll read it.
