[Pat's Review]: "Upon a Winter Night"

Upon a Winter's Night by Pamela Clare
Publisher: Pamela Clare (November 25, 2013)
Series: MacKinnon’s Rangers, 3.5
Genre: Historical Romance

Reunite with the MacKinnon brothers and their wives for Christmas - and a tale of love, new life, and redemption.

The war between Britain and the French is finally at an end, and the MacKinnons are looking forward to celebrating their first peacetime Christmas in five long years. While Iain and Annie have discovered that the pleasures of marriage grow deeper with time, Morgan and Amalie find themselves at bitter odds. Meanwhile, Connor and Sarah have a newborn son to cherish.

The family's preparations for the holidays are interrupted when Iain learns that Britain has not paid the Rangers for the summer's victorious campaigns. Unwilling to let men who fought under the MacKinnon name suffer deprivation at Christmastime, Iain, Morgan, and Connor leave the warmth of their frontier home for Albany. There, they find their happy Christmas, and even their freedom, at risk at the hands of a ruthless British officer who holds a grudge against them.

With the men gone, Annie, Amalie, and Sarah do their best to prepare for the festivities despite differing traditions, a raging bull - and the gnawing fear that their husbands won't make it home in time for Yule.

Events begin the day after the epilogue of Defiant ends. The story includes Joseph, Killy - and revelations about the fate of Lord William Wentworth.

Pat's Review:

Finally, the War is over.  The MacKinnon  brothers are on their family's land living the life they held in their dreams and hearts for the last five years.  Each brother is married to the woman they love, but as we learned in the previous books in the series, it was not an easy trip to the altar for Ian, Connor and Morgan.  It is only a week till Christmas, their crops were plentiful and it had been a bountiful season. They were all looking forward to the warmth, joy and peace of this Christmas.

This is a wonderful novella filled with familiar, and well loved characters. The story picks up right where the last novel, Defiant, ends.  Joseph arrives with Killy in a drunken stupor .  Killy has fallen in love with a very strong, tall, and curvy independent pub owner, who has spurned his declarations of affection, the reason for his drunken stupor. But, they bring other more disturbing news. Disturbing  enough that, despite the Yule just a week away, the brothers must travel to Albany to face a new nemesis, Brigadier General Haviland who has replaced General Wentworth. The wives agree with the decision, but can't help worrying about the danger traveling in the treacherous  winter weather,  but especially fear that they will be detained and won't make it home for Christmas.  Amalie, Annie and Sarah prepare for the holidays, despite their fears.

Ms. Clare's countless historical fans will love this chance to look into the lives and latest adventures of the MacKinnons.  They are husbands, fathers and farmers foremost, but still strong and brave and dedicated to their men.  A surprise Christmas present, brings a very humorous twist to this story, and the love and heat between these couples adds the perfect touch. I highly recommend this novella, and if you haven't read the stories leading to this one; Surrender, Untamed and Defiant your missing some amazing reading.

Aw glad you enjoyed it Pat! I still need to give Defiant a read. I just noticed it on my shelves yesterday and can't believe I haven't gotten to it yet.
