[Kame's Review]: "By Proxy" + "The Christmas Wish"

Kame: Both of these books take place so close together on the timeline I thought it most might want to read them back to back.

By Proxy by Katy Regnery
Publisher: Boroughs Publishing Group (September 22, 2013)
Series: Heart of Montana, 1
Genre: Contemporary Romance (holiday)

A HOLIDAY SURPRISE

Stubbornly small-town Jenny Lindstrom has misgivings when she promises to stand proxy in her best friend’s wedding—misgivings that are fulfilled when tall, handsome Sam Kelley walks into the courthouse an hour late. In order to keep her promise, an afternoon favor turns into a weekend of startling but undeniable attraction, threatening the well-ordered world that keeps her heart at arm’s length from any more pain.

Sam’s plan is to fly to Livingston, Montana, take vows for his favorite cousin, and return to Chicago as quickly as possible. But his plan is turned upside-down when he must spend a weekend with Jenny in Gardiner in order to keep his word. He doesn’t want to fall for the prim, proper schoolteacher whose small-town life seems to him like selling out, but the more time he spends with her, the harder it is to say good-bye.

When city and country come together for Christmas, the unexpected gift is true love.

Kame's Review:

Jenny just couldn’t say no, when your bestfriend who is stationed overseas asks for a favor you do it. So she took off work and is sitting in a courthouse on a Friday afternoon waiting for Kris’s cousin to arrive. Kris and Ingrid are using a Montana law that would allow overseas military to marry by double proxy. Sam, Kris’s cousin rushes in but in the end is too late to meet with the judge to complete the ceremony so the two must make an appointment for Monday morning.

I loved how true to herself Jenny is, and I enjoyed how her honest approach to life had Sam reevaluating his own choices. This book has a great small town feel, and in a Christmas book a small town feel is one that warms your heart.  I enjoyed this book, and better yet - I got interested in all the secondary characters and I want to read more about them. This is a definite series I will follow.

The Christmas Wish by Katy Regnery
Publisher: Boroughs Publishing Group (October 27, 2013)
Series: Heart of Montana, 1.5
Genre: Contemporary Romance (holiday)

Waitress Tess Branson has earned a bad reputation, and the nickname “Fast Tessie,” as result of her poor judgement where men are concerned. She learned from a young age that men – of all ages – were only interested in one thing, which has made Tess distrustful even though she yearns for love.

Lucas Flynn, the short order cook at the restaurant where Tess works, has just been released on parole. After committing a terrible crime and losing someone he loved, he’s trying to get his life back on track. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a kind, pretty waitress who has problems of her own.

Tess makes a wish on a star one wintry night, but it's going to take a heap of Christmas magic to help it come true!

Kame's Review:

Tess has a reputation as a bad girl. And since she has it she might as well live up to it, no one will ever see her differently. Lucas is an ex-con who is happy he found a job a short order cook. He has admired Tess from afar and wishes she would see the beautiful woman he sees when he looks at her.

We first meet Tess in By Proxy, but only a small passing glance that pays more homage to Tess’ bad girl reputation that the person she is truly. And honestly I don’t know if anyone could get Tess to see her potential and give her the freedom to dream like Lucas.  He has a heart of gold and I don’t want to go into more as it will “spoil” some of the surprise of his past.

This is a short novella that can be read immediately after By Proxy, or as a stand-alone. It is a quick read – and a great heartwarming story for when you are sitting by your Christmas tree.

Meet Kame:

Kame is part of a family of readers; one day she picked up the Nook she purchased for her husband and discovered her love of e-books. A few months later he purchased one for her so he could have his back! Kame’s Nook is never far, and she is hard pressed to pick a favorite book, genre or author. As long as there are characters that make her want to sit down and have a chat and a plot keeps the pages turning, she’ll read it.
