[ARC Review]: "Crash Into You"

Crash Into You by Katie McGarry
Publisher: Harlequin Teen (November 26, 2013)
Series: Pushing the Limits, 3
Genre: YA Contemporary

From acclaimed author Katie McGarry comes an explosive new tale of a good girl with a reckless streak, a street-smart guy with nothing to lose, and a romance forged in the fast lane

The girl with straight As, designer clothes and the perfect life-that's who people expect Rachel Young to be. So the private-school junior keeps secrets from her wealthy parents and overbearing brothers...and she's just added two more to the list. One involves racing strangers down dark country roads in her Mustang GT. The other? Seventeen-year-old Isaiah Walker-a guy she has no business even talking to. But when the foster kid with the tattoos and intense gray eyes comes to her rescue, she can't get him out of her mind.

Isaiah has secrets, too. About where he lives, and how he really feels about Rachel. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a rich girl who wants to slum it on the south side for kicks-no matter how angelic she might look.

But when their shared love of street racing puts both their lives in jeopardy, they have six weeks to come up with a way out. Six weeks to discover just how far they'll go to save each other.

My Review:

While reading Crash Into You, I spent most of the book with my heart in my throat, my fingers gripping my NOOK like a crazy woman, blinking back tears of frustration, fear, and finally joy. In short, Ms. McGarry has managed once again to break my heart and rebuild it within 400 or so pages

There is so much going on in Crash Into You, and I can't even begin to sum it up, especially all the twists and turns towards the end; I don't want to spoil anything. But I will say this: Isaiah and Rachel's story just about killed me a dozen times, but it was all worth it in the end.

When McGarry introduced us to these characters in Pushing the Limits, I was sure Beth and Isaiah would end up together. But Dare You To put that theory to rest, and I realized that they were just friends. After reading this book, I wonder why I ever thought Beth and Isaiah belonged together. Rachel is the perfect fit for Isaiah, and I wouldn't have him with anyone else (Okay, except for me, but that's a completely different story...). Like many fans, I was worried, for a brief moment, when I found out Isaiah was destined for someone else; but McGarry did a wonderful job with matching each couple up. I have no complaints; Beth and Ryan complete each other, as do Isaiah and Rachel.

It goes without saying that I was choking back tears during much of this book, something I've learned McGarry has a beautiful talent for. But there were also some bright moments which allowed my emotions to cool a bit or else I may have started bawling for Rachel's pain, Isaiah's tough life, and their uncertain future. In the end, it all works out, and I was finally able to breathe easy with a smile on my face as I closed the book.

One scene in particular stood out for me. Long story short, Isaiah had originally told Rachel early on that he would call her. However, he puts it off, wanting to keep her out of the trouble that's following him. Finally, after she admitted that she thought his lack of a call meant that he was not interested, he pulls this sigh-worthy move:

With a silly smile plastered on my face, I retrieve my backpack from the passenger side of my car and wave at Isaiah before walking away.

Midway across the student lot, my phone rings, and I have to juggle the bagel in order to reach it before the call goes to voice mail. Quickly swallowing a piece, I answer. "Hello?"

"Hey, Rachel?" Isaiah says.

I spin around and in the distance I can spot him leaning against the car again. "Yes?"

"I called."

Joy blossoms through me, from my toes up into the rest of my body to the point that I look down to see if I'm flying.

"Yeah, you did."

I don't read nearly as much YA as I once did, but Katie McGarry is one author I will always buy. She writes such beautiful, heart-wrenching, and real stories, and I have loved every one of them. I know West's story, Take Me On, will be no different... Is it May 2014 yet?
