[Kame's Review]: "Can't Take the Heat"

Can't Take the Heat by Jackie Barbosa
Publisher: Circe Press (October 14th, 2013)
Series: Working It, 0.5
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Delaney Monroe could have married her college sweetheart, Wes Barrows, and lived the life of the idle rich thanks to his family’s casino money. Instead, she chose to become a firefighter. Unfortunately, that decision ended her relationship with Wes, who couldn’t bear the thought of her in such a dangerous profession. A little less than three years later, Del is one of the most respected members of her crew and loves her job, but she desperately misses Wes. Then, during a search and rescue operation, she’s knocked unconscious by falling debris.

Wesley Barrows finds himself with a major dilemma when his ex-girlfriend wakes from a serious head injury with no memory of the past few years or the circumstances that led to their breakup. On one hand, it’s the opportunity he’s longed for since he blew it and let her walk out the door. On the other, the fact that she’s got amnesia at all is the fault of the risky occupation she chose despite his objections. When her neurologist recommends that Delaney be allowed to recover her memory without being told what's happened, Wes has no choice but take her home and act as if they’re still together, which isn’t a hardship when, in his heart, they always were. But as the bond between them becomes closer and more passionate than ever, Wes knows he risks losing her all over again when the truth comes out.

Kame's Review:

There is something worse that when your worst fear comes true, it’s when you purposely change your life – live with the pain and it still comes true. Wes Barrows could not bear the thought of losing his fiancĂ© Delaney Monroe so he gave her an ultimatum; me or your job. She chose her job, actually it’s more than a job it’s her calling. So now for years he has been wishing he could take it all back and have her in his life again. Then his worst fear is realized he receives a call from the hospital; Delaney still has Wes as her emergency contact. Maybe when worst fears come true, so do wishes.

Delaney has no memory of breaking up with Wes. I have never lost my memory, and I can’t fathom what it would be like. I did find the way that her memories came back as believable. Delaney regains part of her memories and finds that what seems to be lost is her understanding what her career is, and how that choice of career actually affected her relationship with Wes. Wes is in a delicate position, he has a second chance, but is unsure of how everything will proceed once Delaney regains her memories; but he isn’t going to waste his opportunity to be with her and love her.

This novella is short in length (hence classified a novella) and short on time span.  The plot of this book is under a week’s time. Each chapter is another day. There are parts that are from each character’s perspective, which I really enjoyed. A few secondary characters where introduced and I can guess on a few who will get their own book. Can’t Take The Heat is the first installment in a new series by Jackie Barbosa I am intrigued, I hope to see more of Delaney and Wes. I look forward to the first full length book in the series.

Meet Kame:

Kame is part of a family of readers; one day she picked up the Nook she purchased for her husband and discovered her love of e-books. A few months later he purchased one for her so he could have his back! Kame’s Nook is never far, and she is hard pressed to pick a favorite book, genre or author. As long as there are characters that make her want to sit down and have a chat and a plot keeps the pages turning, she’ll read it.

Thanks for the review, Kame! :) I'm definitely putting this one on my list--for a novella to gain such a high rating, that tells me it's something special!

Do you read many 'amnesia books'? Do you have a favorite? Have you read any of Jackie Barbosa's previous novels?

Enjoy!
