[Musing Maddie's Review]: "Limits"

Limits by Steph Campbell + Liz Reinhardt
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (June 10, 2013)
Series: Lengths, 3
Genre: New Adult Contemporary

Genevieve Rodriguez is less than thrilled when her older brother’s best friend, Deo, runs off and marries Whit, the girl who doesn't even deserve him. At least that’s what Gen believes. And so what if everyone thinks it’s just a stupid crush? She’s had a thing for Deo for as far back as she can remember.

Freshly heartbroken and downright annoyed, Genevieve is also one ‘D’ away from getting kicked out of school. In other words, life could be better for the rowdy, youngest Rodriquez sibling. Her only hope of passing physics is her quiet, nerdy tutor, Adam.

Adam isn't her type at all. He’s too quiet, too polite, and he’d rather stare at lab charts than bother to notice the bustier top so sexy, it turned the head of every guy in a five-mile radius.
When Adam tells Genevieve that he won’t be back after winter break because his visa is about to expire, the words drop out of her spontaneous, heartbroken mouth before she has the time to think...

“Marry me.”

Thinking it’s a joke, Adam gives Genevieve a firm no. But when the joke turns into something more, all bets are off and all limits are broken. Adam may not notice a perfect bustier, but he can’t resist a good argument. And Genevieve has been arguing to get exactly what she wants her entire life.

Musing Maddie's Review:

Limits by wonderful authors Steph Campbell and Liz Reinhardt, was another stunning companion to the Lengths series. I had truly enjoyed the series thus far, but Limits just really appealed to me. Theirs is the sort of writing that you know will be intelligently skillful  know will be thought provokingly deep, and know that it will have achieved that insanely tricky mixture of sweet and sexy, that only few do really well. So much so, that I couldn’t resist starting it again when I finished.

Was it the characters?

I simply adored the geeky, science-nerd sweetheart, Adam. Adored. This man was that undeniably sweet mix of nerd/strong/shy/sexy-lover man, all rolled into one. He had high intellectual aspirations of who he wanted to be in life‑‑hopes created from preconceived notions of acceptance and love‑‑but had yet to discern how to achieve them.

Genevieve was a gorgeously refreshing woman, trying to work out who she really was, and how to be real, breaking free of long-held expectations of her family. Ostensibly, she was a superficial flake, but on the inside, she was warm-hearted, generous, faithful and highly intelligent.

Supporting characters, especially Marigold, simply added, not detracted from the story. Campbell and Reinhardt consistently balance this input successfully. Impressive.

Was it the storyline?

Actually, a lot of the appeal of Limits, was the break away from standard contemporary romance formula. I loved the blend of these two characters, and how they genuinely forged a strong friendship, before a physical relationship, and how in some ways, how they got there, was a little back-to-front. They worked hard to bring out the best in each other, especially Adam – his insight into and selfless love of the authentic Gen, was moving.

Written in present tense, switching POV smoothly throughout, the book was an affecting and delightful read. I adored the story, the characters, the alternative plot, and of course the smexy sizzle between the Hero and heroine. I look forward to the next installment, Ties.

4 1/2  STARS!

Meet Musing Maddie:

Musing Maddie is an avid reader, who mainly devours all things romance. She loves series, but only when the story warrants a few books rather than one. A strong, intelligent female with a bit of sass and wit is the preferred heroine in the books she reads, and some sizzle between the sheets is welcome too. Well, ok...more than welcome! Well, not just between the sheets is just fine too! She’s from Down Under, so her humor is on the crazy side. Captivating storylines, with well developed plot and yes, hot, hunky Heroes, is definitely a preference, but she loves it when the characters are damaged, and their story brings hope and restoration. Yes please to HEAs!
