[Kame's Review]: "Real"

Real by Katy Evans
Publisher: Gallery Books (September 3, 2013)
Series: Real, Raw & Ripped (1)
Genre: New Adult (Contemporary Romance)

A fallen boxer.
A woman with a broken dream.
A competition…

He even makes me forget my name. One night was all it took, and I forgot everything and anything except the sexy fighter in the ring who sets my mind ablaze and my body on fire with wanting…

Remington Tate is the strongest, most confusing man I’ve ever met in my life.

He’s the star of the dangerous underground fighting circuit, and I’m drawn to him as I’ve never been drawn to anything in my life. I forget who I am, what I want, with just one look from him. When he’s near, I need to remind myself that I am strong–but he is stronger. And now it’s my job to keep his body working like a perfect machine, his taut muscles primed and ready to break the bones of his next opponents . . .

But the one he’s most threatening to, now, is me.

I want him. I want him without fear. Without reservations.

If only I knew for sure what it is that he wants from me?

Kame's Review:

Brooke is dragged to an Underground boxing match by her best friend Melanie, who thinks Brooke needs to get out more.  Brooke is a sports rehab specialist and all she can think of during the match is the injuries the boxers are sustaining.  Melanie is there to see Remington “Riptide” Tate, he is not only dominating in the ring, he has the most incredible body and Brooke is stunned when she sees him for the first time. Something draws RipTide’s eyes to Brooke’s side of the ring and they lock eyes.

Remington is known as Remy to the people who work for him.  He has a small army of people that help him manage his underground boxing career. He is a man of few words, and he guards his emotions. Brooke had a dream, and her failure to reach that dream became a public spectacle. She is drawn to Remy and even though he is furthest from the type of man she would consider she has fallen for him hard. It has been so long since she has allowed herself to be involved with anyone, I question if she believes she deserves it; she has a continual internal struggle with her past failure. While Remy’s flaws intrigued me, I wanted to learn more of what he had hidden; Brooke’s internal debate and thoughts of her flaws wore on me.

The opening of this book was incredible; I was turning pages on my Kindle as fast as I could.  My favorite scenes are when Remy and Brooke are exchanging music to share their inner thoughts with each other. As the attraction between Brooke and Remy was heating up  I started to get lost in all of Brooke’s internal musings.  This book is mostly told from Brooke’s point of view, and she rehashes things in her head over and over. I would have liked to read more dialog, or even another great scene where Brooke and Remy exchanged songs, than read yet another of Brooke’s internal banter of why Remy doesn’t seem to desire her.  The final chapter and Epilogue was as satisfying and polished as the beginning, and I was pleased with conclusion and did not feel I was left hanging until the second book in the series is released. It is my understanding there is going to be a book in this series told from Remy’s point of view, it intrigues me and it maybe something I choose to read later; his character fascinated me and I would have appreciated more from his point of view or even just more dialog with him.

I purchased this book for my Kindle after it was recommended by a friend. This book mentions many songs, with two being critical to the story.  There is a playlist at the beginning of the book. I recommend you take the playlist and listen to the words of any songs you are not familiar with prior to starting the book, I found each song to be a great choice and I am even adding a few to my iPod.

Meet Kame:

Kame is part of a family of readers; one day she picked up the Nook she purchased for her husband and discovered her love of e-books. A few months later he purchased one for her so he could have his back! Kame’s Nook is never far, and she is hard pressed to pick a favorite book, genre or author. As long as there are characters that make her want to sit down and have a chat and a plot keeps the pages turning, she’ll read it.

Hm...I may have to try this one! Thanks for the review, Kame!

Ooh, now I'm curious to know what the songs were! I've recently become slightly obsessed with books that include a playlist in them. :D Please tell me I'm not the only one who enjoys seeing what songs influenced the story!

Enjoy!

Great review Kame! I've been unsure about reading this book, so I appreciate your honesty. Interesting about the music.....
Thanks!

Red - the playlist is great and when they passed songs back and forth it was my favorite parts and actually told more about the characters than their dialog. I would love to know what you think if you read it.

Thanks Pat. I tried to be both fair and honest. I liked Remy but Brooke wore on me. I did like the music list. My understanding is Book 2 is from Remy's point of view and I am not sure how I feel about the same plot but a different point of view...
