[ARC Review]: "My Favorite Mistake"

My Favorite Mistake by Chelsea M. Cameron
Publisher: Harlequin HQN (August 27, 2013)
Series: My Favorite Mistake, 1
Genre: New Adult (Contemporary)

Two secrets. One bet. Who will break first?

Taylor Caldwell can't decide if she wants to kiss her new college roommate or punch him.

On the one hand, Hunter Zaccadelli is a handsome blue-eyed bundle of charm. On the other, he's a tattooed, guitar-playing bad boy. Maybe that's why Taylor's afraid of falling in love with him, or anyone else. She doesn't want to get burned, so she needs him gone before it's too late.

Hunter himself has been burned before, but Taylor's sexy laugh and refusal to let him get away with anything make her irresistible. Determined not to be kicked out of her life without a fight, Hunter proposes a bet: if she can convince him she either truly loves or hates him, he'll leave the apartment;and leave her alone.

But when the man behind Taylor's fear of giving up her heart resurfaces, she has to decide: trust Hunter with her greatest secret, or do everything in her power to win that bet and drive him away forever.

My Review:

I grabbed this book from NG because of the cover; you know me, I'm a proud CoverWhore! The blurb souded great, too, and I remembered a few readers talking about it on Twitter recently. I wasn't expecting to laugh so much, and yet I did--the banter between Hunter and Taylor ("Missy", as he nicknames her) was brilliant, and their scenes sizzled with chemistry and wit. I found many of their banter scenes stuck out the most once I closed the book. From the bedroom scenes (long before they ever, ahem, got together) to the restaurant scene, My Favorite Mistake is such a fun and sexy read!

“I nearly had a cakegasm at the table. My eyes rolled back in my head, and I moaned.

"Sweet Christ." I opened my eyes to find Hunter watching me with the strangest expression on his face.

"What? It's really good; you should try some," I said, pushing the plate at him. It was a testament of how embarrassed I was about the cakegasm that I was even sharing at all.

"I swear, if there weren't a table between us, I would be kissing you right now. And none too gently."

I put my form down and swallowed so I wouldn't choke. "You didn't seem to mind about the recliner," I said.

"True. But there wan't an audience, and that's a very ugly recliner. This is a very nice table. Also there is glass and sharp things I wouldn't want hurting you."

"Good point. Please, have some."

"If you're going to make that noise and that face again, I don't know if I can let you have any more."

"I'll be good. I swear."

"You're not good. That's the problem."

"You're right. I'm not," I said, giving him my own smirk. "I do try, though."

"Cruel. That's the word to describe you right now."

"Just have some cake.”

Hunter is a hero any reader will fall for--hard. What's not to love about him He's got a secret past, he's "broken", tattooed, funny, sometimes a jerk but also very sweet and charming. He's perfect...by being imperfect.

This--could you say no to this?

“I want you. Right now. If you said yes, I would kiss you. I would kiss you until we both forgot that lips were made for anything other than kissing. I'd take you out of that outfit, as cute as it is. I want to see what you look like with nothing on. I want to make you sigh like you did with the cake. I want to be with you. Right now.”

*melts* Dear Hunter--If Missy doesn't want you, I do! Love, TBQ

Ahem, sorry, back to my review...

“That's what they all say. Everyone says they want to know you, but they don't. They want to know the nice things, the pretty things. No one wants to know the ugly parts, the parts that keep you up at night. They say they're okay with it, but then they drift away and you never see them again. I've seen it happen way too many times.”

Taylor has her own secrets, her own nightmares to battle, and I liked that she was strong enough to pick herself back up after what happened in her past. Yes, she still has problems 8 years later, but she has come a long way. I was curious to find out both Taylor and Hunter's secrets, and when they finally came out, I was shocked--they both went through so much! They deserved a happy ending, and eventually they did get it. They didn't fall straight into love--or into bed--and they both needed time to heal.

“We were both broken, trying to become unbroken. Maybe we just needed a little help. Not to fix each other, but to help us fix ourselves.”

4.5 STARS! Simply put, My Favorite Mistake is a truly amazing book--funny, sexy, sweet and emotional! I didn't want the book to end, and as soon as I finished the last page, I was ready to do a reread! I am putting Cameron's other books on my list and I will be recommending this book to others. In fact, I will be buying myself a copy for my keeper shelf--a sure sign that this is a wonderful book, as I don't buy books too often anymore (so many books, so little time, space, and money....).
