[Kame's Review]: "Falling for the Backup"

Falling for the Backup by Toni Aleo
Publisher: Loveswept (June 24, 2013)
Series: Assassins, 3.5
Genre: Contemporary Romance
After serving as a dutiful bridesmaid in the wedding from hell, Aynslee Shaw just wants to slink home to Nashville and forget the whole trip. That is, until the hottest guy she’s ever seen is seated next to her on the flight and dazzles her with his easy laugh and killer smile. But just when she thinks things are getting good, he vanishes, leaving Aynslee wondering, was that guy the one? And did she just let him slip through her fingers?

Former superstar goalie Jordan Ryan is back on the ice—finally. After a crippling knee injury that had him wondering if he’d ever play pro hockey again, he’s got his full attention on rebuilding his career. So a pretty—okay, beautiful—girl on a plane shouldn’t be a distraction. But Jordan is very, very distracted. And when Aynslee crosses his path again, he’s not sure any job in the world is worth missing his second chance with a woman like her.

Kame's Review:

Jordan Ryan has reached the highest pinnacle of profession hockey, being a goalie for the Assassins, now he is at a personal low.  A serious knee injury took him off the ice almost two years ago. He is now healed but during that time it was his backup’s time to shine and he is now the top goalie in the league and Jordan sits on the bench.  Jordan is not ready to retire so he is actively looking for a new team.  Sometimes a great low can bring a great prize, as Jordan get comfortable in his seat on a flight home from Buffalo he looks up to see the most beautiful woman.  Aynslee Shaw has experienced the definition of a horrible day; she must rush home from her niece’s wedding to a flooded basement wearing her bridesmaid dress because her aunt took her suitcase and just as she sits down next to Jordan her coffee spills all over her lap. It turned out to be a wonderful conversation starter that continued the whole flight, Aynslee was sure Jordan felt the sparks of attraction as well and he would ask for her number before they parted. She is stunned when they part ways at baggage claim with just a “See you around”.

I am so happy Toni Aleo wrote this novella about Jordan.  I loved his character from the first page, especially his untypical interests. He seemed so grounded and his caring for Aynslee’s feelings gets high points from me. Aynslee’s a great strong woman who was not afraid to state her feelings when she and Jordan by chance meet again the third time. I cheered for Aynslee and Jordan as much as I did  when I read Aubrey and Tate’s book; their love made me giggle.

These Assassin’s players are some of my favorite contemporary male leads.   They each bring a little different take on the idea of a professional hockey player, and the women in their lives are more than just arm candy.  My absolute favorite scene – well besides the ending – was when Jordan met Aynslee’s parents. I was sad when this book ended, I enjoyed it immensely. Even though this is set deep in the series you could easily read this novella and not be lost in the series details. I look forward to more from Toni Aleo’s Assassin’s and I hope to see a glimpse at Aynslee and Jordan’s HEA as secondary characters in a future title.

Meet Kame:

Kame is part of a family of readers; one day she picked up the Nook she purchased for her husband and discovered her love of e-books. A few months later he purchased one for her so he could have his back! Kame’s Nook is never far, and she is hard pressed to pick a favorite book, genre or author. As long as there are characters that make her want to sit down and have a chat and a plot keeps the pages turning, she’ll read it.
