[Kame's Review]: "A Lot Like Love"

A Lot Like Love by Julie James Publisher: Berkley (March 1, 2011) Series: FBI / US Attorney, 2 Genre: Contemporary Romance

The FBI wants her cooperation.

As the daughter of a billionaire and the owner of the city's top wine store, Jordan Rhodes is invited to the most exclusive parties in Chicago. But there's only one party the FBI wants to crash: the charity fundraiser of a famous restaurateur, who also happens to launder money for the mob. In exchange for her brother's release from prison, Jordan is going to be there—with a date supplied by the Bureau.

Agent McCall just wants her.

As the top undercover agent in Chicago, Nick McCall has one rule: never get personal. This "date" with Jordan Rhodes is merely an assignment— one they're both determined to pull off even if they can't be together for five minutes before the sarcasm and sparks begin to fly. But when Nick's investigation is compromised, he and Jordan have no choice but to pretend they're a couple, and what starts out as a simple assignment begins to feel a lot like something more.

Kame's Review:

Nick McCall is a special agent with the FBI, based in Chicago. A self-described Cro-Magnon man, likes bourbon, sports on TV and does not do relationships, it is just something he doesn’t see working with his current work situation. He has just come off of six months of undercover work, it seems like that is all he has done these past six years.  Jordan Rhodes owns a wine boutique in Chicago.  Her father is one of the richest men in the country, worth one point two billion dollars, and Kyle her twin brother is in prison for forcing Twitter to shut down for a period of time.  She is sarcastic, has a great business mind, adores wine and loves her family with her whole heart. The bond she and Kyle have is strong; she would do anything for him. Nick is used to pretending he is someone he is not, but being someone’s boyfriend – pretending or not - is new territory for him. Both are unsure of the feelings that are growing, and neither is confident enough to be the first one to change the rules.

“I shouldn’t be doing this…I don’t even like you seventy-five percent of the time.”

Sometimes in a romance book there is one character that is written stronger than the other. That is not the case in this book. Nick and Jordan are both clearly defined characters. Julie James brings both of them to life with great dialog. Romantic sparks fly between Nick and Jordan, mixing along with witty banter.  I really would love to sit around a bar and have a great conversation with them (and Jordan could teach me so much about wine!). Jordan’s character is a polished heiress and one of the gang all in the same day.  She showed inner strength and at times vulnerability. Nick has definite ideas of what it means to be a guy, and the feelings in his heart for Jordan confuse him. I think they are perfect for each other, and I hope to see a glimpse of them in other books in this series.

I won this book from a blog contest. I enjoyed it and I have read it twice, and I have read the last three chapters about ten times! More books by Julie James will be added to my TBR pile!

Meet Kame:

Kame is part of a family of readers; one day she picked up the Nook she purchased for her husband and discovered her love of e-books. A few months later he purchased one for her so he could have his back! Kame’s Nook is never far, and she is hard pressed to pick a favorite book, genre or author. As long as there are characters that make her want to sit down and have a chat and a plot keeps the pages turning, she’ll read it.

Oh my, I've heard so many great things about Julie James! When book 1, Something About You, was on sale last month for NOOK, I quickly snatched it up. After your review on this one, Kame, I think I better start the series very soon! :D

Have you read any of James' books?

Enjoy!

10 times? Dang they must be good! I'm so curious now. I've had her on my tbr pile for ages but for some reason haven't gotten to the series. I don't know why though because everything about it sounds great. And I love when characters are evenly developed like that. Very good to know :)
