[Kame's Review]: "In Rides Trouble"

In Rides Trouble by Julie Ann Walker
Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca (September 4, 2012)
Series: Black Knights Inc, 2
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Rebel with a Cause

Becky "Rebel" Reichert never actually goes looking for trouble. It just has a tendency to find her. Like the day Frank Knight showed up at her door, wanting to use her motorcycle shop as a cover for his elite special ops team. But Becky prides herself on being able to hang with the big boys-she can weld, drive, and shoot just as well as any of them.

Man with a Mission

Munitions, missiles, and mayhem are Frank's way of life. The last thing the ex-SEAL wants is for one brash blonde to come within fifty feet of anything that goes boom. Yet it's just his rotten luck when she ends up in a hostage situation at sea. Come hell or high water, he will get her back-whether she says she needs him or not.

Kame's Review:

For three years Becky has been going through the motions.  She is the owner of a custom motorcycle shop in Chicago, she turns out incredible bikes, she is more than the brains of the organization – she is also the artist behind it all. Black Knight Inc. is more than a motorcycle shop; it’s a cover for a group of covert government defense contractors.  She knows what type of work they do, never the specifics of their missions. These men live in her compound, she loves them as family; but at times she is treated as an outsider.  There is one she loves more than family, Frank “Boss” Knight, the leader of the group, but he frequently sneaks out of the compound to see a woman in another part of town and Becky is not going to be the other woman.  At the end of her emotional rope Becky packs a bag, announces she is using her banked vacation time and sets out for the open sea, to sail away her troubles with a girl friend of hers.  Just some quiet time to figure out her life, well until the pirates show up!

“Oh she finally understood what it meant to be tempest-tossed. But what she couldn’t understand was whether Frank was the storm or the shelter from the storm.”

I enjoyed this book; the writing was superb! It was a nice emotional change from the intensity from Ghost and Ali’s story Hell On Wheels. It built a nice bridge that gave the reader some more background on key characters, and shows how the team works towards the successful completion of a mission.   It also solidified Becky’s role in the Black Knights, and at the same time showing a softer side of Frank.  The romance between Becky and Frank was second to the “mission” .  This was not a romantic suspense book to me, but more of a suspense book that had a smattering of romance.   In Rides Trouble was more about Becky and Frank coming to independent conclusions that a relationship was impossible than dealing with and communicating their raw feelings.  Once they communicated with each other their love was tied up in a few pages with a nice bow.

Please do not let the lack of romance and steamy scenes deter you from reading this book; it is necessary for a nice set up to book 3, Rev It Up and Julie Ann Walker’s characters and writing will get you laughing out loud at times!

4 STARS!

Meet Kame:

Kame is part of a family of readers; one day she picked up the Nook she purchased for her husband and discovered her love of e-books. A few months later he purchased one for her so he could have his back! Kame’s Nook is never far, and she is hard pressed to pick a favorite book, genre or author. As long as there are characters that make her want to sit down and have a chat and a plot keeps the pages turning, she’ll read it.
