[Kame's Review]: "Hard Evidence"

Hard Evidence by Pamela Clare
Publisher: Berkley (October 3, 2006)
Series: I-Team, 2
Genre: Contemporary Romance

After the murder of a teenage girl, a mysterious man in a black leather jacket was seen lurking near the crime scene. Investigative reporter Tessa Novak has him in her sights as the culprit…

That man was Julian Darcangelo, an undercover FBI agent working with the Denver police. He’s closing in on the trail of a human trafficker and killer. Tessa’s accusations could blow his cover, and he wants her off the investigation.

But just as Tessa has made Julian a target of interest, she is now a target of the killer. And as they are forced to trust each other, their physical attraction escalates as intensely as the threat from a ruthless murderer who wants to see both of them dead…

Kame's Review:

“I love you, Tessa. God help us both, but I do.”

This second installment in Pamela Clare’s ITeam series starts up a few months after Extreme Exposure’s epilogue.  Tessa Novak is the Denver Independent’s reporter on the cop beat.  She is a caffeine addict and one night when she worked late she stops at a gas station for a bad cup of coffee because her favorite coffee shop is closed.  While waiting in line to pay for the sludge in the cup, a young girl runs into the store.  She begs the clerk to call the police, begs for their help.  Before the clerk can dial 911 the young girl is shot dead.  This time Tessa is not just reporting the story, she is part of the story.  What she doesn’t realize is she has inadvertently become part of an investigation that has consumed Julian Darcangelo’s life for more than 3 years.

When Julian imagines his future it never has a white picket fence.  He will never have a family; he doesn’t even know what it means to be part of a family. From the moment he kisses her to keep her quiet Julian is drawn to Tessa. Their relationship starts out combative, but it eventually turns into love.  Julian is rough around the edges, but he has his sweet moments with Tessa.  Tessa, who battles her own past she isn’t proud of, is the perfect person to love Julian.

My favorite part of this book is how good a reporter Tessa is. Julian and Tessa must go to great lengths to keep their professional lives and their personal connection separate. They do not discuss the case in detail, but Tessa’s investigative skills are good enough for her to figure out what the young girl’s murder was really part of. I also enjoyed how Julian’s character grows so much in this book and I am sure he will be one of my favorites in this series.  Besides a wonderful story, Pamela Clare gives us insights into characters we met in the first book.  Tessa is good friends with Kara and Reece and they help her at crucial times in this book.

This has to be one of my favorite romantic suspense books.  I enjoy romantic suspense and especially books where the hero or heroine grow emotionally during the story. This is a great read, whether you want to read it as part of the series or a stand-alone.  Me, I am continuing on with my friends on the ITeam and I can’t wait to find out what happens next

Meet Kame:

Kame is part of a family of readers; one day she picked up the Nook she purchased for her husband and discovered her love of e-books. A few months later he purchased one for her so he could have his back! Kame’s Nook is never far, and she is hard pressed to pick a favorite book, genre or author. As long as there are characters that make her want to sit down and have a chat and a plot keeps the pages turning, she’ll read it.
