Here's my candidate for the week:

Confidence Tricks by Tamara Morgan
Release Date: February 12, 2013
Genre: Contemporary

Asprey Charles never intended to become a thief.
As the youngest son in the illustrious Charles line, Asprey grew up believing he would one day take his place in the family art appraisal and insurance firm. And by 'take his place,' he meant continuing to enjoy his playboy lifestyle, spending family money on his Cessna and shirking every responsibility that dared come his way.

But when a life of crime is thrust upon him, Asprey is happy to slip on a mask and cape and play a highwayman rogue. After all, life is one big game—and he's excellent at playing.

Poppy Donovan has been a thief for as long as she can remember.
Born on the wrong side of the tracks, Poppy hasn't had very many opportunities to better herself in this life. That's why she sees her recent release from jail as a fresh start—no more crime, no more cons. Too bad the resolution doesn't stick. When she learns that her grandmother lost her savings to a low-life financial advisor who preys on seniors, she vows to dip her toes back in the game one more time.
It's all going just fine until the necklace she intends to pawn to fund her con gets stolen by a handsome, mocking, white collar thief. A handsome, mocking, white collar thief who, it turns out, has the potential to steal a whole lot more than money. If Poppy isn't careful, this blue blood with no business on her side of the tracks is going to run off with her heart...and that's the one thing she can't afford to lose.

Why?

When Tamara revealed the cover earlier this week, I just HAD to use it--it's goregous! I love the way the couple are posed, and especially how the heroine is reaching into his back pocket (sure, she's a thief, so one would assume it's to steal something--but hey, he's a sexy man, so who knows, it could be more.... *wink* ).

I LOVE Tamara's previous works, and though this one will not be part of that series, I am still dying to read it. Not only does the book sound great, the cover's delicious and I already know that I love Tamara's stories. This one will be going on my (rare) pre-order list as soon as links go live. :)

[Review]: "Prince of Wolves"

Prince of Wolves by Quinn Loftis
Publisher: CreateSpace (February 17, 2012)
Series: The Grey Wolves, 1
Genre: Paranormal YA

Jacque Pierce was just an ordinary 17 year old girl getting ready to start her senior year in high school in Coldspring, Texas. When a mysterious foreign exchange student from Romania moves in across the street, Jacque and her two best friends, Sally and Jen, don't realize the last two weeks of their summer was going to get a lot more interesting. From the moment Jacque sets eyes on Fane she feels an instant connection, a pull like a moth to a flame. Little does she know that the flame she is drawn to is actually a Canis Lupus, werewolf, and she just happens to be his mate; the other half of his soul.
The problem is Fane is not the only wolf in Coldspring, Texas. Just as Fane and Jacque are getting to know each other, another wolf steps out to try and claim Jacque as his mate. Fane will now have to fight for the right to complete the mating bond, something that is his right by birth but is being denied him by a crazed Alpha. Will the love Fane has for Jacque be enough to give him the strength to defeat his enemy, will Jacque accept that she is Fane's mate and complete the bond between them?

My Review:

I'll be honest—I had problems with Prince of Wolves. The writing was a bit awkward to read, and rather than feeling like I was in a story, it was more like I was being told that I was reading a story (does that even make sense?). I felt like the word choices didn't match the story being told, or the characters in it, and this bothered me, made the novel difficult to enjoy.

However, despite these flaws, I still found myself flipping the pages, curious to see how things turned out. I didn't mind the basic storyline, and even found it a bit unique (personally, I've yet to read a shapeshifter book for YA were the mated-pair theme comes into play so strongly). But the writing did stand in the way a bit, keeping me from loving this book.

Jacque's character didn't seem very solid to me; one moment she would say something this way, and the next she'd say it in a completely different way. The slang, the cliches and just odd words just didn't fit her, or her friends. At least in my opinion! Fane was okay, but again, not great as a character—I felt like I was missing something from him, too.

Now Jacque's two best friends didn't exactly steal the show, either. Jen has a wicked (literally--dirty) sense of humor, but most of the time I felt her jokes and wit were buried under all the writing issues. I wanted to like her, and the things she said, but more often than not she was just in the background, barely there. Sally...well, I can't really tell you much about Sally. For whatever reason, nothing comes to mind—so either she wasn't properly “explained” or the description didn't stick.

3 STARS! Still, when I finished Prince of Wolves, I found myself wanting to pick up Blood Rites, to see what happens next. In spite of the issues I may have with this one, I think this series is going to become a bit of a guilty pleasure. Books that I can't help but wanting to finish, even if they might not be 5 star candidates. And that's okay with me because 3 stars isn't anything to be upset about in my opinion, and the fact that I do wish to read the rest of the series eventually is a pretty good sign!

Her Heart for the Asking by Lisa Mondello
Series: Texas Hearts, 1

But now her uncle’s heart is failing and she has to convince him that surgery will save his life. She never dreamed the first thing she’d see when she stepped off the plane would be her biggest nightmare...the one man she’d never stopped loving.

This led him to make the hardest decision of his life and he can still see the bitterness and hurt on Mandy’s face. All these years it has killed him to think Mandy had forgotten him and moved as far away as possible from him. But now they’re back in Texas, and he’s going to do all he can to win back her love.

Her Heart for the Asking by Lisa Mondello
Excerpt
"What are you doing here?" Mandy Morgan asked, dropping her too-heavy overnight case on the sun-roasted tarmac. After a grueling forty-eight hour work stint and a five-hour flight from Philadelphia, she stood wilting under the brutal Texas sun, facing her biggest nightmare.

Beau Gentry.

She groaned inwardly, drinking Beau in with her eyes as if she hadn't had a drop of water in months. Eight years was more like it. If she were eight years smarter, she would be moving her aching feet as fast as she could in the opposite direction. But all she could do was stare at eyes so bright they rivaled the blazing sun. At lips so kissable she'd spent the better part of her adult life trying to wipe the memory clean from her mind.

She had expected Beau would have aged some. When she allowed herself to think about him at all, she reminded herself. The faint lines etched in the corners of his sleepy gray-blue eyes gave a hint of maturity, but most probably caused by long days in the cruel sun.

She fought the urge to take a closer look at his ruggedly handsome features, but failed. How could he have gotten better looking after being abused by every bronc-busting horse on the rodeo circuit? His angular jaw, strong and determined, was shaded with beard growth that was probably a day old, maybe more. Mandy suspected if Beau grew a full beard, it would grow in thick and be the smooth texture of his almost black head of hair. She forced aside past memories that gave her such knowledge with renewed irritation.

The man didn't even have the decency to have a crooked nose. What should have been bent and awkward from being broken a few too many times was instead long and straight, shaped perfectly between high cheek bones most women would swoon over, or kill to have themselves. But on Beau Gentry, it was just one thousand percent robust cowboy.

Damn him.

"I'm your ride out to the Double T," Beau said, gripping the edge of his white straw cowboy hat and tipping it in a cordial gesture.

She ground the heels of her low pumps into the soft tar to contain her growing irritation. Did he think she was an idiot? "No way."

"'Fraid so," he said, his expression slightly askew.

"Hank didn't mention anything about you coming to get me when I spoke to him on the phone."

"I suspect he thought you would have found some excuse not to come if you knew I was picking you up."

"He would have been right. Why didn't one of the hands come get me?"

Settling his hand at the base of his neck, Beau replied, "You're looking at him. As of three weeks ago I am one of the ranch hands at the Double T."

His Heart for the Trusting by Lisa Mondello
Excerpt
Still dancing in circles, Midnight eyed Mitch, seemingly aware of his every move. Mitch turned his back to the mare and played with the bridle, as if ignoring the horse. Finally, Midnight stopped running and with cautious steps, she moved forward, stopping every so often and taking a side step, bobbing her head or giving a neigh, as if calling Mitch to pay attention. Eventually, she stepped up alongside him and gave him a quick nudge with her nose. Then another until she was settled alongside Mitch.

Ever so softly, Mitch stroked her head and neck and front legs with long, easy strokes. He smiled his pleasure and crooned softly.

Without even realizing how he'd done it, the bit was in Midnight's mouth and the bridle was around the mare’s head. Mitch let the reins fall and allowed Midnight to get use to the bit.

Such trust.

“That's amazing,” Sara said quietly.

“Not really,” Mitch said, glancing up at her as he kept his attention on the mare.
She turned to him. Mitch was looking at her, his eyes filled with the same questions she’d seen in the kitchen.

Then he said, “She still could bolt at any time.”

Sara gripped the splintered rail. “But she hasn't. She came to you when she could have easily just kept running in circles.”

“Trust isn't an easy thing for her. She still doesn't know what to think.”

“She let you put the bridle on her. You didn't have to chase her. She came to you.”

“I have to win her trust. And when I have it, I can't abuse it or she'll never give it up again.”

Mitch carefully took the bridle off Midnight and took a few steps away. Midnight followed like a stray dog.

“Does she trust you now? Enough to ride her?”

Mitch shook his head. “We still need a little time together before she'll allow me put a saddle on her. Right now, she's letting me know her boundaries.”

“She let you put a bridle on her as if she didn't even know you were doing it.”

His face was bright with a smile. “Oh, she knew. But she's still making up her mind. She wants to trust me. I can tell. And maybe one day she will.”

“Mitch?”

He looked up at her again from across the corral. He was incredibly handsome. His dark hair was the color of mica in the fading light, and his eyes had turned from blue to a smoky gray. He stood tall, his weight shifted to one hip as he held the reins of the bridle.

Such strength.

Sara remembered all too well how it had felt earlier to be in Mitch's arms. Her heart still raced with the memory.

“What if she's never ready to trust you?”

Mitch's expression grew serious, pulling her into his gaze. He took a few steps closer, his boots kicking up dust from the ground as he walked. He stopped a good ten feet from where she was standing and said, “I can wait as long as it takes, Sara.”

"I was told I could find Cody Gentry out here by the pool," she finally said.

The muscles on his face twitched slightly. "Who's looking?"

The timbre of his voice was deep, with a faintly ominous edge that reminded Lyssa of the voices she'd heard as a child when she and Kim would sneak downstairs in the middle of the night and watch old horror flicks on cable. She couldn't see the movies, she'd only heard the voices, and that added to the mystery, raised the level of anticipation, sending shivers racing up her spine.
Cody wasn't anything out of a horror flick. She ignored the swell of apprehension that had her confidence faltering.

She knew better than to extend her hand in a normal greeting for her introduction. It'd be rude since Cody couldn't see her. Instead, she hoped her voice sounded pleasant. "I'm Alyssandra McElhannon."

He didn't move. "What do you want?"

"I brought Otis," she said cheerfully.

"What's Otis?"

"Otis is a who, not a what."

Cody's whole body stiffened. His voice was controlled, but edgy enough to send shivers chasing over her skin. "I'm sorry you came all the way out here like this. Apparently someone failed to give you adequate information. I'm not training cuttin' horses anymore."

"Oh, Otis isn't a horse. He's a dog. Your guide dog. And I'm here to train the two of you to work as a team." Otis, like many dogs trained as seeing aids for the vision impaired, were a lifeline to independence.

He sat still, unaffected. It wasn't at all the reaction she'd been expecting.

"Not interested."

"And you would be Cody Gentry, I take it?" she asked already knowing he was.

"I just said I'm not interested."

"And I heard you. My job is to make you interested."

"Says who?"

Confused, she said, "Mike Gentry for one."

He groaned audibly and straightened up in his chair. "My father sent you, huh?"

"That's right. He didn't tell you I was coming?"

"Did he already pay you for your troubles?"

"Well, yes, a portion is—"

"Then you're fired. I'll make sure you get the rest of the money you're owed by mail. I'm sorry he wasted your time."

Cody was as difficult as Mike Gentry had warned but in a totally different way than Lyssa had been prepared for.

"In the first place, the school pays my salary. Second, training my dogs and students is never a waste of my time. Furthermore, you aren't the one who hired me, your father did. In fact, he asked me to stay on at the ranch until you and Otis were working well together. So, you can't fire me, no matter how much you squawk."

He made a face that almost made her laugh. "Squawk?"

Crossing her arms across her chest, she said, "I call it like I see it."

"Listen, Ms. McElfen er McEllaf… What's your name again?"

"McElhannon," she said slowly. "Alyssandra Orchid McElhannon."

He folded his arms over his chest. “I suppose you could say I’m following Blake’s lead. Marriage solves a few fundamental problems in my career path.”

She stared at him full on now, not trying to look away. “Your problems. Not mine.”

“Problems you helped play a role in.” He saw the spark in her eye before she managed her first syllable of defense.

She sat the tea down and placed a hand on the counter. “That’s low, Carter.”

“And true or you’d be the first to tell me I’m wrong. If I had a choice, I’d be married by Monday to help dispel all the media crap created by yours and Gwen’s night on the Texas town. I thought I could come to you and obtain a little bit of cooperation.”

“A little bit of cooperation. Marriage is a tad more than a little bit of anything.” Her voice rose and her knuckles started to grip the counter.

“Yet you earn your living arranging marriages or partnerships on trite reasons less important than mine.” How dare she follow a moral high ground. Maybe she’d forgotten how well versed he was on her and Samantha’s business.

“You forget that our clients have to approve of the relationships we arrange. They have to like the person—”

He laughed, interrupting her. “Do you really want to pretend we aren’t friends to prove your point?”

Her cheeks grew rosy which he had to admit was a much better than the pasty color she’d been sporting when he walked into the house. He felt the fire burning inside her as she shot daggers with her eyes.

“You’re my best friend’s husband’s friend. If you’re looking for a wife you might peek into your little black book, or whatever it is you use, and draw another name.”

Carter let his arms drop and took two steps closer. The angrier she became, the more his blood churned. His body responded to her outrage, but not in anger. “I don’t want to draw another name.”

Blog Tour: Character Interview w/ Jillian Stone + Giveaway!

WELCOME TO THE BLOG, JILLIAN! :)

Jillian Stone’s Victorian Romantic Suspense novel AN AFFAIR WITH MR. KENNEDY won the 2010 RWA Golden Heart and is the first novel in The Gentlemen of Scotland Yard series for Pocket Books. Her sexy, supernatural Steampunk novel, THE SEDUCTION OF PHAETON BLACK, won the 2010 Romance Through The Ages Erotica category and sold to Kensington Brava. Jillian lives in California and is currently working on the next adventure for both series.

Where to Find Jillian:

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~

Interview with an Antihero: Phaeton Black, Paranormal Investigator

Jillian: You are the most misunderstood character I have ever written. Why is that?
Phaeton: I suspect it’s because you wrote me in the fine tradition of the Byronic hero. To quote Lord Macaulay, he is a “man proud, moody, cynical, with defiance on his brow, and misery in his heart, a scorner of his kind, implacable in revenge, yet capable of deep and strong affection."
Jillian: May I finish the thought in Byron’s own words? “That man of loneliness and mystery, scarce seen to smile, and seldom heard to sigh.” I also gave you a strange profession, paranormal investigator––care to elaborate?
Phaeton: One might say it is my only other area of expertise after absinthe and lovemaking. A dubious sort of skill foisted upon me from birth. I am able to communicate with gorgons and goddesses, wraiths and demons, succubae and seraphim, bloodsuckers, shape shifters. I could go on...
Jillian: Why is it, do you think, that I didn’t give you special powers to battle these creatures?
Phaeton: I am a man who lives more by his wits than brawn. I have found that one can negotiate with the darker creatures of the underworld as effectively as one can say––do business with an corporate raider. Recently, after receiving instruction from Doctor Exeter, I have learned to manipulate the physical universe in a few interesting ways––but  again, I still rely heavily on my ability to communicate with darker side.
Jillian: In order to write a love story for you, I tossed a rather unique young woman at Phaeton Black––how are you holding up?
Phaeton: Ah yes, Miss America Jones. Enchanting, young Cajun beauty. You introduced us under rather unique circumstances. I was chasing an apparition down a dark alley off Savoy Row, and she was on the run from the filthy, thieving pirates. As I recall, she pressed a knife to my throat and demanded sex...I did my best to accommodate her.
Jillian: A rather shocking experience, wouldn’t you say?
Phaeton: Some readers do seem to be rather shocked by it. I found it most stimulating, as did Miss Jones, by the way. We continue to find ways to astonish and arouse each other in the next two novels of the series, as well.
Jillian: You have quite a reputation as a lover. How did you become such a master of the amorous arts?
Phaeton: Giving pleasure to women arouses me nearly as much as receiving it. When a woman is arching her back, writhing and moaning my arms––let’s just say I respond readily to such sweet messages.
Jillian: There are essentially three plots interwoven into The Seduction of Phaeton Black. There is a blood sucking Egyptian goddess wreaking havoc all over London and then there is the added task of getting America’s stolen merchant ships returned to her––as well as the love story. Do you have a favorite part of the novel?
Phaeton: Besides the love scenes, I’d have to say I liked the mystery of tracking down Qadesh, the Egyptian goddess, better than being captured and keel hauled by pirates. As a reader, you get to decide for yourself. This first novel in the series is quite a romantic adventure––at least it was for me, but then I play Phaeton Black, Paranormal Investigator.
Jillian: I invite you all to join Phaeton and America on this sexy supernatural romp––and by the way, Phaeton has a question for commenters:
Phaeton: Besides the bedchamber, name a favorite trysting spot (either in fiction or in real life).

The Seduction of Phaeton Black by Jillian Stone
Publisher: Brava (March 27, 2012)
Genre: Paranormal Romance (Steampunk)
Hold onto your knickers ladies, Phaeton Black has arrived!
He's the man with the magic touch. A master of deduction and other midnight maneuvers, Phaeton Black is Scotland Yard's secret weapon against things that go bump in the night. His prodigious gifts as a paranormal investigator are as legendary as his skills as a lover, his weakness for wicked women as notorious as his affection for absinthe. But when he's asked to hunt down a fanged femme fatale who drains her victims of blood, he walks right into the arms of the most dangerous woman he's ever known.

The Seduction of Phaeton Black by Jillian Stone
Excerpt:

She had never met the like of such a man.
After a few deep draughts of spirit, he kicked a chair out from under the table and straddled the seat. “The chair rails guard my bulging privates. Not to be confused with filthy pirates.”
He took another swig from the bottle. “Tell me about these imaginary, cutlass wielding corsairs. Miss––?”
 “My name is America Jones.”
He set an elbow on the chair back and cupped his chin. He had a wary way of studying her, as if she were some kind of curiosity. “Are you incapable of answering questions in a truthful manner? Again, Miss––?”
She set her jaw and glared. “America.”
“Is the name of a continent, or two. I can never remember if there are two continents designated north and south, or one continent designated south and north. Which is it?”
Why did he play the Mad Hatter? Leaning far back off the chair, he had to catch himself. The grog appeared to be having an effect. “And there is a new country, the United States of America.”
Even with arms tied down, she still managed a shrug. “It is my name, sir. America Síne Jones and I have learned to live with it these twenty-ought years.”
“I believe I may call you by your middle name.” His mouth twitched. “Sin–ay. I do so admire the first syllable.”
Her gaze narrowed to a quizzical squint. “Is your mind always in the gutter, Mr.––?
“Black.” Liquid sable eyes flecked with gold drank in every inch of her. “Only when I am interested, Miss Jones.”
“And are you interested?”
“I once enjoyed a meal at the Langham Hotel, which I thought about repeating for weeks afterward.”
“Is that what I am to you? A supper?”
He lowered his chin. “A banquet, my tempting dark dove.” Hooded ebony eyes crinkled at the sides. He enjoyed taunting her.
Captivated for a moment, she mentally slapped herself.  “I would love to stay and chat, really I would, but I must be on my way.” She flashed the faintest of smiles. “Now that we are introduced, certainly you can release me from bondage?”
“One more thing, Miss Jones. If you would kindly explain about the pirates?” He tilted his head. “Your eyes are most extraordinary. Almost feline.”
What an exasperating man! While he swigged from the bottle, she tugged again on her bindings. “Why do you insist on torturing me?”
She pressed her lips together and chewed the inside of her bottom lip. A force of habit when vexed beyond endurance. Well, she supposed two could play this silly, annoying interrogation game. “Are your parents still living, Mr. Black?
He sat up and blinked. “Mother died of a virulent meningitis years ago. My father teaches advanced mathematics at Trinity College.” He ran a hand through thick waves of dark brown hair. “He might as well be dead. We don’t get on.”
“I could not tell you if my mother is alive or dead. I’ve not been home to Louisiana in many years. Buried my father four short months ago. Charles Gardiner Jones.” She leaned forward purposefully. “A decent and honest merchant trader. Acquaintances said he couldn’t face his business failure––that he died of drink. People who knew him well, told a very different story. My father’s heart was broken by his lying, scheming business partner.”
When her eyes threatened to tear, she lifted her chin. “After his funeral I vowed to bring Yanky Willem to justice.”
“And how goes this pursuit?”
She frowned. “Not as well as I’d hoped. Last night Willem caught me rifling through a year’s worth of cargo manifests.”
He arched a brow. “Searching for––?”
“Proof of piracy, Mr. Black.”
He smiled that maddening grin of his. “I knew if I was patient, we might actually get round to the original subject of my query––the filthy pirates.”
“Chased me from the Docklands all the way down the Strand.” She laid her head back against the padded chair and counted the cracks in the ceiling. “When you stepped into the sharp edge of my blade, I was clean out of bullets.”
“Bullets? And where, pray tell is your pistol?
Now it was her turn to grin. “Untie me, and––“
“I think not, Miss Jones.” From behind protective rungs, Mr. Black stepped over the seat of his chair and ventured closer. “Shall we search together?”

Thanks for stopping by, Jillian, and please know you are free to do so again! :) I look forward to reading your books, they all sound great!

I absolutely loved your interview with Phaeton, he sounds like quiet a character and a unique hero! :)

Now, dear readers, remember that Phaeton has a question for you:
Besides the bedchamber, name a favorite trysting spot (either in fiction or in real life).

Hm, I'll start the discussion, shall I? :) Let the fun begin, ladies!

I'm afraid I can't give you a favorite spot in real life. (Hehe--take that as you will...my lips are sealed!).

As to fiction, there are so many great choices, but....I have to say I've always had a fondness for trysts in the library/study. Perhaps it's my fondness for being surrounded by books, the quiet of such a room, but I love when the characters, ahem, get to know each other in these rooms. :) Generally this is only in historicals, but I'd like to see one in a contemporary book--naughty librarian feel, anyone? :D

What about you? Share, please! :)

Be sure to follow the rest of the tour! :) Giveaway/Tour ends on July 20th.

Enjoy!
