What Did I Receive?

As you know, "What Did I Receive" is much like the popular "In My Mailbox". On Fridays, I try to post any and all books I may have received in the past week, unless I haven't had any deliveries.

Unfortunately, the junk mail and bills seem to overflow my mailbox more often than books.... In a book lover's world, the roles would be reversed, of course! :D

Here's what I got this week:

Note: I'll be honest, the cover is a bit... creepy looking. But the book sounds like it could be good. And I guess this shows, don't judge a book on it's title-- I would have thought, without looking at the summary or anything else, that it was some sort of religious book, but as far as I know, it's not.

Title: Into the Path of Gods

Author: Kathleen Cunningham Guler
Summary (B&N):

Fleeing the destruction of her village and an enforced betrothal, Claerwen encounters a pair of men destined to link her fate to that of gods and kings. This first novel by Celtic historian Guler serves as an introduction to a series of pre-Arthurian fantasies revolving around the search for five legendary treasuressymbols of the High King of Britain.

~~ Thanks again to Kathleen herself, whom I won this from via LibraryThing's Member Giveaway! ~~

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Have a great weekend, I'll be back next week with more reviews. Oh, and please answer the poll I've got on my sidebar-- I want to know the truth from you!

Enjoy! Until Next Time,

See You Next Week!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving with their family (unless you do not celebrate it, of course, then I hope you at least had a good week!). I know I did, and I'm still feeling the symptoms from Holiday Eating. Turkey, side dishes, pies.... *SIGH* It all looked so good, and tasted even better, how could I possibly resist? Now that all the (time consuming) preparation is long over for Thanksgiving, it just means it's time to work on the next big celebration-- Christmas of course! And, like every other year, I always end up running out of time to get it all accomplished-- I keep saying "Next year I'm going to purchase a few gifts throughout the year, not wait until the last two weeks". But, sadly, this is one resolution I never quiet manage to keep...Yet. Maybe next year...?
So, due to the lack of time I've got this weekend, I probably won't have a review up until the later part of next week... possibly later, but I hope not.
I will still have a post or two though, don't worry, it just won't be a review. Maybe I'll go back to doing a Teaser Tuesday or Waiting on Wednesday. Who knows-- you'll just have to check back next week to find out, I guess! I do have to say though, in my defense, I have done better this past month on reviews-- 6 of them, compared to the average 1-2 I'd been doing for most of this year. It's still not nearly as many reviews as I would like to have up, but, considering everything else I've got in my life besides my blog, it's not half bad. I'm *hoping* that this next month I can hit 10 reviews or more. We'll have to see--- December is always crazy, isn't it? So maybe I'll keep that goal for January, start fresh for the year.
I hope that if you do go out to shop today, you don't get trampled (or worse!) like some unfortunate souls last year. Be safe, have fun, and I hope you get more shopping accomplished than I do... Which should be easy, since my plans for the day include finishing cleaning up after last night's dinner, studying for my finals, and working on getting my upcoming reviews taking care of. Oh, I will have one last post later today, my 'What Did I Receive?', so look for that this afternoon.
Have a wonderful weekend, and I'll see you all next week!
Enjoy! Until Next Time,

[Review]: "Love Is a Battlefield"

Title: Love Is a Battlefield
Author: Annalisa Daughety
Pub. Date: October 2009Publisher: Barbour Publishing, Incorporated
Genre: Christian Fiction, Romance
Series: A Walk in the Park Ser.
Summary (B&N):

When park ranger Kristy O'Neal returns to her job at Shiloh National Military Park after being left at the altar, she can hardly stand the thought of facing her colleagues as a jilted woman. Still, Kristy realizes her heart will mend fastest where her real love lies: the natural surroundings of a famed national park. Just when Kristy summons up her strength to re-enter her workplace, she discovers that a new ranger—a handsome and eligible man—has replaced her. Ace Kennedy immediately feels the heat, but definitely not the type of heat he hopes for after meeting Kristy. As the two attempt to work amicably with one another, outside pressures in the form of vandalism, interfering matchmakers, old wounds and fresh emotions draw Kristy and Ace closer while also setting them against each other.

Review:

My first impression of this novel upon beginning it was "average". From the characters to the story line, nothing really stood out to me--- it sounded like something we've heard countless times, both in books and real life.

Kristy, our heroine for Love Is a Battlefield, has your average life. She's been in her dream job for most of her life, and loves it. She falls for the 'perfect' man, only to later find out he's the wrong guy for her-- after being left at the alter and broken up with through a note, of all things. Now her life isn't so perfect, she's been replaced at work by the good-looking new guy, and her mother's trying to play match maker already.

Haven't we seen this before? And if not, doesn't it seem like the sort of thing you'd see in your own town? Personally, when I pick up a book, I want to escape from the real world, not jump into the slightly fictionalized version of the same thing! Then again, I've always had trouble getting into contemporary fiction/romance, especially Christian Fiction such as this. But no matter my own genre preferences, I simply felt like this book needed something more, something new.

All the characters seemed a bit common, not particularly strong in development. Despite being the main character, Kristy almost seemed to take a back seat to Ace at times, and even he wasn't as forward of a character as I would have liked. Plus, for more than 3/4 of the book, we knew next to nothing about him-- he just kept eluding to some "to be announced" reason why he came to take this new job, and I was hoping it would be something good that added to the plot, but in the end, when you find out, it's a big let down. I won't ruin it, but let's just say it adds about as much excitement to the book as watching grass grow.

From the conversations between the characters to the flow of the story line, everything just seemed a bit too predictable and bland to me. Honestly, I could practically tell you what the characters were going to say even before it came up-- it should not be that easy to predict! It wasn't a horribly written novel, but it didn't have any real "pop!" to it either.

And then there was the fact that, despite this being a Christian Fiction, I couldn't see, nor appreciate, the romance that was suppose to be in it. I know, it's suppose to be chaste-- but must it be invisible and fake too? That's my one problem with CF novels--- it's not that there may be the occasional undertone of religion in the novel (though, at times, that too can get annoying), but the fact that most authors in this genre seem to think that the romance must be as clean as the new snow! Come on, even the most strict of religious couples are not that boring in their relationships! Is there anything wrong with a bit of lust, a kiss or two? Unresolved sexual tension, when written well, can be just as sexy as the most erotic romance scenes!

3 STARS! Despite the mediocre story behind this novel, I can't say I hated the book-- not by any means. However, it was lacking in excitement, and romance, which are my only real criticisms. Otherwise, the book was a quick, and at times charming, read-- not too heavy, but a very light fiction novel. If you don't mind the brief mention of religious beliefs in your fiction (aka, Christian Fiction), then by all means, pick this one up when you get some spare time, but don't move it to the top of your wish list.

Hmm... I really need to start working on my preparation for tomorrow's big dinner, but I'm far too lazy right now. *Pause* Okay, so I'm also a bit *preoccupied* by Facebook too, but that's besides the point! :D

[Review]: "Hush, Hush"

Title: Hush, Hush
Author: Becca Fitzpatrick
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing
Publication Date: October 2009
Genre: Teen Fiction/Fantasy/Romance
Summary (B&N):
For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch came along.
With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment.
But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure who to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life.
Places to Order Hush, Hush at:
My Review:
From the moment the cover for Hush, Hush hit the blogging community early this year, the buzz surrounding the book has been astronomical, making it one of the most sought after books for reviewers and readers alike, with numerous people quickly adding it to their wish list. Everywhere you looked online, people were talking about this book, eager to get their hands on an ARC. And when some were lucky enough to get an early copy, their reviews were (almost always) full of praise and good comments. A fallen angel falling in love with a human girl-- who wouldn't want to read it after the huge influx of vampire romances?
But after finally reading Hush, Hush for myself, I have to wonder if perhaps all the pre-release hype only helped to set me up for the disappointment I found upon completion. Despite the high expectations I had going into the book, countless recommendations from fellow bloggers, and various top ratings for this book, I found it to be lacking.
Although I'd like to say it was due to the fact that I was expecting something else, something more from Hush, Hush, I'll be honest: it's also due to a few flaws in the book.
It's not that I disliked the book-- I did very much like it. However, it didn't reach the "5 Star" potential for me like it did for many. While still an enjoyable enough read, Hush, Hush fell short for me in a few critical areas.
First, no matter how I hard I tried, I simply could not connect with Nora, our heroine for this novel. She seemed too shallow at times, annoying during others, and as the reader, I found very few spots that made me even want to like her. Perhaps if Becca Fitzpatrick had developed her a bit more, I would have felt differently. But for me, good characters are key to a good book. Unfortunately, she wasn't the only character in the book I had this problem with-- in fact, I can't think of one from the entire novel that I can honestly say I loved. They were all too bland, average, stereotypical even.
Second, I felt like the plot was based more on the suspense leading up to the discovery of Nora's would-be killer than the romance between Nora and Patch (more on this later) or even the supernatural theme. The story behind Patch's fallen angel status was buried beneath more than 3/4 of the book, and what little we did get was no where near enough to feed my hunger for his background, and therefore the development of the story. I love when an author tells us the story behind the characters, their pasts, and the novel's fantasy world in general. For me, sadly, Hush, Hush disappointed on all three accounts.
The romance between Nora and Patch was a bit strained, practically hidden until the last few pages or so of the book. Although she supposedly fell for him from day one, I didn't really see the connection--- why was she attracted to him, besides the cliche "mysterious new boy in class"? I couldn't really find any other evidence, and for me, this is vital to not only a realistic relationship, but also making the characters themselves seem more real.
And as for Patch... Well, I know he was meant to be a big mystery to everyone, the "bad boy" hero, and Nora is lead to believe he may be behind the attacks for most of the book--- but shouldn't the hero of a novel still be able to reach out to the readers and somehow reassure us that he's the good guy? To me, Patch was just another typical bad boy, also underdeveloped as far as a main character goes. Up until the last few chapters of the book, I was practically convinced that Patch was truly the evil one-- and not due to the author's ability to write suspense and mystery, but because I simply could not see him as the hero, little lone the love interest. Much like I did with Nora, I often found myself wondering where the depth and connection was. Instead of being a solid, physical part of the story, they both almost seemed like ghosts-- dormant, but still technically there.
There were, of course, parts that were well done in the book. I enjoyed some of the more witty conversations between the characters, and during some of the scenes, the writing did have some very good descriptions. Not to mention the suspense and mind-altering scenes, which worked on not only Nora, but even the reader too.
Over all, this book was a good, quick read. Not perfect, but not terribly flawed either. What it lacked was adequate details, more development (in characters, story, and plot) and a stronger connection with the reader. There was so much potential in the plot line, yet I didn't feel that it really accomplished what it could have-- at times I thought maybe I was reading a contemporary teen fiction novel that had "fallen angel" plugged in randomly throughout the book. In my opinion, a bit more information (specifically around the fallen angels and other supernatural themes in the book) and this could have easily been a spectacular debut for Fitzpatrick.
Though my words may almost make it sound otherwise, I really did like this book. But I just didn't love it. My constructive criticisms are meant only as that-- helpful, polite, but not snarky by any means. Of course, this is just my opinion.
4 STARS! Though it hit a few snags along the way instead of flowing clearly, Hush, Hush is still a good choice if you want something besides vampires and werewolves. A bit humorous during some scenes, and thrilling during others, this one is an enjoyable book to curl up with--- light and mildly romantic, but not deeply saturated with paranormal themes.
~~~ This time, I did not receive this book from a contest or publisher to review-- it was one of the few that I simply read from my pile and decided to review.
~~~
Okay-- next review I put up, a bit later this week, will be back to adult fiction/romance instead of YA, like my last... 4 reviews have been. I promise! :-D
Enjoy!

My Review:
Another captivating cover-- and story-- by the talented Zoe Marriott! Prepare to be engulfed by the fire in this one--- Daughter of the Flames is even better than her first novel, with more action and romance, yet still containing the magical quality that grabbed my attention in The Swan Kingdom.

Once again, Marriott's characters are very well developed and a joy to read about. Zahira (or Zira) is even more of a kick-a$$ heroine than Alexandra (from Swan Kingdom). Fiery, passionate, training to be a warrior priestess but suddenly destined to be queen of her people, she's everything you could ask for in a heroine. She's not perfect, her life has been hard, but you can easily relate to her-- and isn't that one of the best things you can say about a character?

And with such a strong heroine, you need a hero that can match her, right? Sorin, the Lord she falls for (despite that fact that he's the "enemy" at the beginning) fits the job perfectly. He's not a wimp, but he's not too rough either--- the right medium between the two, combined with the sweet moments he has with Zahira, makes him a good choice for a husband. I can easily see why Zahira would fall in love with him!
Even better, you can clearly watch them connect, getting to know and trust each other, instead of just falling straight into lust like some other books. Although, for a YA novel, the romance does get fairly heated at times... But nothing too graphic, for those of you that are worried about it! It's a nice addition to the emotional connection you can see between them, without making their love seem cheap.

To sum it up, this is a mesmerizing story, set in a fantasy world, with a good dash of all the requirements for a perfect novel: action, suspense, romance, and the fight between good and evil. In other words, Daughter of the Flames has it all! The touching romantic spots, the adrenaline-laced fighting, and the enchanting descriptions-- together these will keep you up all night just to finish the book!

And, as much as I enjoyed her previous novel, I have to say that Daughter of the Flames is much better-- and one that you definitely shouldn't miss if you love a good fantasy novel, YA or not!
4.5 Stars! Who needs paranormal worlds all the time when you can lose yourself in a good fantasy romance like that of Daughter of the Flames? No matter the age, if you enjoy a good magical story, this is the book for you! If nothing else, the covers themselves are breathtaking-- and the story? Even more so!

[Review]--- "The Swan Kingdom"

Places to Order The Swan Kingdom from:
My Review:

Besides the beautiful cover art, The Swan Kingdom itself was a dazzling story, a remake of a fairy tale but done in Marriott's own way. Full of magic, set in a fantasy world that you can practically picture just by reading the book, and with an added dose of action and adventure to keep the story alive, this book is truly worth your time to read.

Marriott does a wonderful job with the characters, especially Alexandra , our heroine for this journey through the Kingdom. is a good example of a strong young woman, one that does not whine and allow others to push her around. She's got courage, and she's not afraid to face her fears-- even if that means her new (evil) stepmother. In a way, Alexandra reminds me a lot of Yelena, from Poison Study (by Maria V. Snyder), which is a compliment, really. If you enjoyed Snyders' magical world, then I'm sure you'll love The Swan Kingdom as well.

I enjoy reading new takes on old fairy tales, and this one is no different. This time, the base for the novel is the story of the young boys, turned into swans by their stepmother, destined to stay cursed forever. Unless, of course, Alexandra , who was spared this curse (though still exiled from the kingdom), can save them and reverse the spell. Along the way, she meets new friends, finds more adventures, and, of course, falls in love, too.

My only qualm lies in the romance- it felt a bit lacking most of the time, even for a YA novel. I wish Marriott had added more to this, showed us how they really fell for each other.

The story flowed nicely, though there were a few action sequences where I almost felt a bit lost. But just as quickly, the confusion was gone and the writing was clear again. A few tiny flaws, but no where near enough to destroy the story or the readers' enjoyment!

4 STARS! For a first novel, Zoe Marriott did a wonderful job, and I'm looking forward to many future books from her. She has a talent for writing, and a unique story to tell the readers. Added to that her good fortune in cover art designs, and you've got a rising start to keep your eyes on!

~~~
Thanks to The Shady Glade, whom I won this book from during the contest last month!
~~~

P.S.: The cover I used on here is the UK cover, which is the edition I won from Shady Glade's blog contest. I have to say, after seeing the US covers for Marriott's books, I was glad I was lucky enough to receive the UK ones. In my opinion, they're much prettier! And come on-- be honest, we all go for new books based (partly at least) on the covers!

Oh, and I know that it's been a flood of YA books I've been reviewing lately-- it's just that's what I've been receiving for review purposes, and since I put those books above my own (bought) ones for reviews on here.... However, I promise that as soon as possible I'll go back to more of a variety mix for reviews! I'm hoping that you're still enjoying the reviews, and finding new books to check out-- especially if YA is not your usual genre of choice. :) Isn't that the point of a good review and blog, to help you venture outside your normal? Places to order Shiver at:

My Review:
How can you beat perfection? The answer: you can't. Which is why, no matter how long I work at my review, it will never quiet do justice for Shiver, which could be, quiet honestly, my all-time favorite YA novel to date!
Beginning with the plot itself, Shiver is truly one of a kind! Unlike the countless other werewolf stories out there, this isn't one of them-- it sticks out from the rest. Instead of turning whenever you want, Shiver's wolves cannot control their shift... But it's not the moon that holds them enthralled. Instead, it's the temperature. If it gets too cold (Winter, for example), they change into wolf shape for good, only to emerge human when it begins to warm up.
Also, unlike most versions of the werewolf, Sam (the wolf hero of our story), loses all of his human memories, feelings... For months upon months of the year, he's simple a wolf, surviving in the woods like any wild animal. And for years, this is the only time that Grace gets to see Sam, not knowing at the time of course, in his wolf form sneaking through the woods at the edge of her house.
But this year is different-- this year, Sam knows it could be his last year, meaning that after this winter's change, he'll continue to be a wolf for the rest of his life, however long or short it may be. For unknown reasons, this always happens to the werewolves-- soon they loose themselves completely to the wolf, and their human side ceases to exist. Although Sam's only a teenager, and not nearly as old as many of the previous shifters that have been rendered permanently wolf, he knows deep down that his time is up. This pushes him into finally confronting Grace, telling her not only what he is, but how he feels.
The romance between Grace and Sam was, to be quiet honest, beautifully written, heart breaking at times, and very sweet during others. You couldn't ask for anything better-- even if you aren't a teenager, I promise, you won't miss any of the more sensual romance you expect from adult books, Shiver manages to cover all the bases (no pun intended!) and enchant the reader from page one!
Characters, always an important part of a story, are also wonderfully done in this book. You really do connect to them, feel for them, and enjoy being a part of their journey as they develop, expand, and yes, even when they're hurt. When Grace and Sam grieved, I did as well. When they were happy, I was reading with a smile on my face. I really enjoyed how we got to switch between Grace's point of view and Sam's--- this not only helped the story to flow, but it allowed us to see into both of their hearts' and minds'. When an author can pull the reader into the story like that, well, you know she's got one amazing skill, and one that I hope she continues to use in the future books as well!

5 STARS! Shiver manages to hold the reader captivated from beginning to end, and if you're like me, you'll find yourself putting the book down, yet the characters and the words will stick in your mind for weeks after, just as clear as if you had the book open in front of you. I'll be honest-- I even cried at the end, and though I won't ruin it and say 'Why', I will say it was due more to the brutally honest words Maggie used to convey the emotion and story than any harmful events. Simple words for an ending, but they were enough to make me cry! That's what I call powerful writing. Romantic and sweet, funny and touching, and even enough of an underlying suspense/unease to keep the action of the story going, Shiver is sure to becoming a legend in YA shapeshifters! I know it is on my shelf.

What Did I Recieve?

Nothing this week either. :-( Not 10 minutes after posting this, I checked my email and found an ARC E-Book of a 2010 YA Release... I won't say what book it is, yet, but you'll know closer to the time when I schedule my review for it on my sidebar. :D I'm excited to get started, even with the fact that it is an E-Book, which means strained eyes and an aching neck, but I think it will be worth it!
BUT, I did have a bit of a... slip up while at the grocery store... Yes, I know what you're thinking: "AGAIN?". But what can I say? I couldn't resist the pretty covers!
Here's what I picked up this week:

I know I was suppose to have my Shiver review up today, but I had a few set backs. I will have it up on Monday though! I want to finish tweaking it, and making it as good as possible-- I really loved the book, and I hope my review can even start to do it justice (if you've read it, you know what I mean, no explanation needed!)

Hope everyone has a good weekend, go have fun before the snow hits for the year!

Enjoy!

[ARC Review]: "Modern Day Witch Hunt"

My Review:

For a quick read, Modern Day Witch Hunt wasn't half bad. However, I can't say that it was my favorite either.

I think the main thing that lowered the rating for me was the lack of connection between the characters. I know, this is an 'erotica' novel, not straight romance. But, for me at least, romance is still a key part of erotica novels as well. Maybe the sex takes a front seat for a while, and it's much more explicit, but the romance should still be there. Right?

Despite this flaw, the writing in general was good. Howell does a nice job at describing the setting, allowing the writing to flow, et cetera. However, the one thing I would have liked a bit more detail on is the magical world this was set in. I wanted to know so much more about the 'Watchers', what they are, and especially a bit more about Luca's past. There's so much potential with this plot line, but it was like we only got a skim from the surface of it, when I wanted to submerge myself in the world instead. If this part of the book had been expanded a bit more, with a lot more details -- and characters too (really, I don't remember any besides h/hr!) -- I'm sure my rating would have gone up more.

Even though it was a novella (short novel), I felt like the basic plot for the book was a bit too rushed. The build up, the back ground information, it didn't quiet flow as smoothly as I would have liked. Maybe it would have worked out much better if this had been a full length novel instead.

BUT, I still liked the book, and I'll still look for Howell's future books. A few flaws here and there won't throw me off the author for good. And it could be that I was looking forward to more of a romance novel at the time that I picked this up-- it's an opinion only, so I can't say the problems I had with the book are completely the author's fault.

3 STARS! If you like to read erotica novels, then maybe you should put this one on your next wish list. A nice, quick read, Modern Day Witch Hunt manages to tease your interest, but in the end, it leaves you wanting more-- maybe a future book about the Watchers introduced in this one? If only Halloween wasn't over, I'd suggest this as a good one to read that night.

~~~~~ Thanks again to Kirstein (aka, Kiki Howell) for sending this novel to me to review! ~~~~~ Sorry I'm running so behind on my reviews! Even though my computer is back, it's not completely recovered..... Slow running, a few straggling viruses that I've had to scan and 'kill'. Really, this just isn't my month! Or months, I guess, since it all began last month...
But I will have Shiver's review up ASAP, hopefully before Friday. Also, I 'm going to get back into more posts in between reviews (maybe more of my wish list?!).
Enjoy! Until Next Time,
